  • Family DoctorsThe Faculty of Medicine has the largest family medicine residency program in Canada, with 400+ resident doctors training in urban, rural, remote and Indigenous communities across British Columbia. 95% of UBC MD grads who completed family medicine training at UBC are now practicing in B.C.
  • SpecialistsSince 2000, the Faculty of Medicine has trained more than 6,200 resident doctors across 76 specialty and subspecialty programs — including cardiology, neurology, pediatrics and emergency medicine. They practice in urban and rural hospitals from British Columbia’s south coast to the far north and everywhere between.
  • MD Undergraduate TrainingAt any given time, the Faculty of Medicine is training over 1,200 MD students in hospitals and clinics across the province. Over the past decade, more than 2,000 UBC MD graduates have gone on to become primary care physicians, specialists, health leaders and more.
  • Health ProfessionsThe Faculty of Medicine trains health professionals in a wide range of programs, including physical and occupational therapy, midwifery, genetic counselling, audiology and speech sciences. UBC students in PT and midwifery do their training in every region of British Columbia, with over 95% choosing to practice throughout the province after graduation.
  • Indigenous HealthToday, more Indigenous doctors and health professionals are graduating from UBC than ever before, supported by the Indigenous MD Admissions Pathway and other initiatives focused on health equity in education, and responsive and culturally sensitive care for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in British Columbia.
  • Research and Innovation TrainingHome to 26 world-class research centres and institutes, the Faculty of Medicine provides training to the next generation of scientists and innovators in a wide array of programs. That’s 500+ graduates per year — many of whom will go on to establish themselves in B.C.’s dynamic biomedical innovation sector and help to power the Canadian economy.

  • NorthEncompassing more than half of the province’s landmass, B.C.’s North is home to urban, rural, remote and Indigenous communities spread across a vast region roughly the size of France. UBC MD and health professions students, resident doctors, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows gain broad experience in healthcare and clinical research in a uniquely northern context.
  • IslandThe Faculty of Medicine has deep roots on Vancouver Island, with medical and health professions students and resident doctors training in hospitals and community health centres from the southern shores of Victoria to the Island’s northernmost town of Port Hardy.
  • InteriorBordered by the U.S. to the south and Alberta to the east, B.C.’s Interior is home to a diverse range of communities. Each year nearly 2,000 medical student and resident doctor rotations take place in local hospitals, clinics and primary care settings across the region. The Interior is also home to the Faculty’s Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management.
  • VancouverVancouver is a vibrant training hub for medical students and resident doctors, as well as health professions students in PT, OT, midwifery, genetic counselling, audiology and speech sciences. Much of the Faculty of Medicine’s research is conducted at world-class centres and institutes located here in the heart of B.C.’s rapidly-growing life sciences sector.
  • FraserAs one of the fastest growing regions of B.C., the Fraser region is home to a growing number of UBC learners supporting the diverse healthcare needs of communities stretching from Surrey to Chilliwack. Close to 5,000 UBC student and resident training rotations take place in hospitals, primary care settings and clinics across the region every year.

    Meet Sofia Graham Arshavsky, BioDevice Innovation Fellow in the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering.

    At the Conconi Family BioDevice Foundry, the next generation of biomedical engineers and scientists are creating highly innovative biodevices to solve research and clinical problems, under the guidance and mentorship of faculty and staff. From point-of-care diagnostic tools to organ-on-a-chip therapeutic testing, these devices are transforming how we detect, monitor and treat disease.
